UNDERSTANDING THE CHANGING ROLE OF NATURAL GAS IN EMERGING ECONOMIES
Decisions regarding the future of natural gas will shape local economies, and the global effort to combat both energy poverty and climate change.

Problem

Natural gas plays an important role in the energy systems of many emerging economies — including in countries developing newly discovered domestic resources for the first time. However, in the face of growing climate concerns, policymakers and financiers are grappling with difficult decisions and weighing potential trade-offs regarding the future role of gas in achieving climate and development ambitions.

Relevance

Decisions regarding the role of gas will shape the future of emerging economies, including their ability to end energy poverty, their available pathways to net-zero emissions, and their opportunities for industrialization and global competitiveness.

Our Approach

By bridging data-driven research with policy, the Hub aims to help decision makers answer these questions and identify pragmatic solutions to end energy poverty, power economies, enhance climate resilience, and accelerate the global shift to low-carbon economies. We also explore various ways to mitigate challenges including market barriers, local infrastructure needs, and cost.
