The world’s fastest growing region still has huge unmet power needs.
Over 2 billion people still live in Asian countries with inadequate and unreliable energy supply. To unlock their full potential for growth and prosperity, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and others all need to meet rising energy demand.

The Problem

Despite rapid economic growth, energy poverty remains a constraint on health, human welfare, and economic development across parts of South and Southeast Asia. Too many businesses suffer from high power costs and chronic unreliability.

Limits to the Current Approach

Many international actors are focused on small-scale household approaches to combat energy poverty in Asia. While helpful for the poorest customers living without any electricity, this strategy will have limited long-term impact because such systems cannot provide the energy needed to drive business, job creation, and higher incomes.

Our Approach

Asia faces important energy policy decisions over the next decade. The Hub is bringing together and translating research, data and expertise to help ensure those decisions are smart and sustainable. Our goal: to guide policymakers and investors to focus not only on household electricity access, but also on building smart high-energy solutions which can help the continent achieve its own development ambitions.
