Vijaya Ramachandran is a Hub fellow and the director for energy and development at the Breakthrough Institute. She works on the impact of the business environment on the productivity of firms in Sub Saharan Africa and has written extensively about the need for a reliable supply of electricity to raise productivity in the private sector. She has published her research in journals such as World Development, Development Policy Review, and Governance, and in the Oxford Handbook on the Economics of Africa. Prior to joining BTI, Vijaya worked at the Center for Global Development, the World Bank and in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations. She also served on the faculties of Georgetown University and Duke University. Her work has appeared in over fifty media outlets including the Economist, Financial Times, Guardian, Washington Post, New York Times, National Public Radio, and Quartz Africa. Vijaya has a PhD in Business Economics from Harvard University.
